Praying for your future husband.

If you’re a Christian woman who has grown up in church, attended girl’s bible studies and retreats, read the How To Be Good Christian Girl Handbook, or have simply grown up around other like-minded females, I am almost certain somewhere along the line “praying for your future husband” has been a topic of discussion. If not, there’s no time like the present, eh? 🙂

But hold up just a darn minute there girlfriend, what do we actually mean by praying for our futures husbands?! Like praying he has a high paying job, wash-board abs, and can meet every one of our needs and wants in life so we live happily ever after?

Lol. No. Just, no.

I read a beautiful article from Jennifer Smith on the Unveiled Wife asking the question: do I pray for my husband or about him? She touches on it for the viewpoint of an already married woman, but I believe this subject can benefit us single ladies over here.

Praying for your future husband is praying for his heart, his faith, protection, health, his mind, for God to grow him and use him, etc.

Praying about your future husband is just as I mentioned earlier, she explains it as:

Praying about my husband equates to me venting to the Lord the different ways my husband isn’t living up to the standard I have set for him, how our marriage is struggling, where my husband is wrong, and how hard it is to be me. I justify my gossip simply because my audience is the Lord.

Wow..just WOW. Can we talk about straight up conviction in the last sentence y’all?!

So in single chick terms, this means not praying to God that who he has for you lives up to YOUR standards, is a perfect human being (Have you ever met one of those? If so, let me know, because I’ve surely never met one!), praying that He would supply him with abundant money to support all your wants, etc.

*Important side note: Most parts of this post can also absolutely be applied to praying for your current boyfriend! That is something that has also been on my heart lately, as many times throughout my day God nudges on my heart to pray for my boyfriend (hey, Mark!). I admit sometimes I fall into the trap of praying ABOUT him, instead of FOR him. I’ll touch on that more later.

So, ok, how do I pray for “him”? What do I pray for? We’ve already touched on what NOT to pray for–things stemming from your fleshly desires and selfishness we are ALL prone to. Here are some great ways to pray over your future husband!

  1. Pray that his faith would be renewed and revived each morning. (Isaiah 40:31)
  2. Pray that he would feel and sense the Holy Spirit with him. (Isaiah 41:10)
  3. Pray for his self-esteem and that he is confident in who God crafted him to be. (Luke 12:7)
  4. Pray that he surrounds himself with a supportive community of like-minded believers who pour into him and keep him accountable. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)
  5. Pray that he would be absolutely captivated by the love of our Savior.
  6. Pray for his purity, that he would actively flee sexual immorality. That he would seek to hold onto his God-given gift of purity, and keep it untouched until the bounds of marriage. (1 Thessalonians 4:2-8)
  7. Pray that he will love you and cherish you always with the perfect love of our God. (Ephesians 5:25-30)
  8. Pray that God would give him to ability to build you up and be a support when times get rough.
  9. Pray that God would ready his heart for your “baggage” (I carry a lot 😉 )
  10. Pray that he is not weighed down by his past sins, failures, and baggage, but surrenders it fully to God. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
  11. Pray that his anger would not lead him to sin and fill him with toxic rage. (Ephesians 4:26-27)
  12. Pray that God would continue to grow, mold, and shape him into the man of God our Creator has knitted him together to be. (Isaiah 64:8)
  13. Pray that he would actively pursue you everyday. (Song of Solomon)
  14. Pray that he would grow into a strong spiritual leader in your marriage and household. (1 Corinthians 11:3)
  15. Pray for his education, career and finances, that God would bless him indefinitely in these aspects in His will. (Jeremiah 29:11)
  16. Pray that if it is in God’s will, that He would fill him with humility, patience, strength, boldness, honesty, and a gentle spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23)
  17. Pray that he would keep his body healthy and take care of his temple of the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 6:19)
  18. Pray that God shows him how to love you as much as he loves himself. (1 Corinthians 13:4-8)
  19. Pray that he continues to love God even MORE than you. (You should love God more than anyone or anything, even your spouse!) (Luke 10:27)
  20. Pray that God prepares his heart to be a husband and father.
  21. Pray that you would be receptive of each other’s love languages and learn how to love each other better every day.
  22. Last but not least, pray that it all be done in God’s timing–AKA perfect timing! (Lamentations 3:25)

No this is not an end-all-be-all but more of a guide to help ease you into the right direction. There are SO many things to pray over your future husband and future marriage. Write down a few things and start a new tradition for yourself of praying often for him!
Also, as mentioned, many of these things you can absolutely pray over (in person or in private) your current boyfriend and your relationship. I personally use many of these things to pray for mine 🙂

Pray continually that God would guide you gently along the way, instructing you with each move you take. Keep in mind God has an individual journey for every person. Whether His will for your life be singleness or marriage, THRIVE in it. Bloom where you are planted. Never underestimate the power of prayer.

Am I perfect? Heck to the no. Do I have days where I push praying to the back burner? I’m only human, I make mistakes. Do I find myself praying selfishly rooted prayers at times? Yes, I do. But I catch myself. I ask God to check my heart & bring me back to His reality.

Why are you still searching?

I’m always on a search. I think all of us, at some point in our lives, are on a search.

What do we search for?

  • Comfort
  • Happiness
  • Identity
  • Love
  • Satisfaction
  • Acceptance
  • Security
  • Attention
  • Intimacy

The list varies from person to person, but these are areas my soul personally longs for.

Here’s where it gets real: Where do we search for ______?

If you are anything like all of the rest of humanity (yes, you are!), you alone, without God, are imperfect and fall short of righteousness and holiness. We are naturally prone to look in the wrong places.

“Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love.”

You may time after time find yourself looking for unconditional love, comfort, and security in a significant other. You constantly yearn for their love, which they will offer you to the best of their ability if it is in God’s will. But what happens if his or her best isn’t enough? You keep trying to force more and more love out of them; it eats at your soul and squeezes the life out of him or her. That is placing an unfair and unbearable burden on them, which is not in line with God’s will. After all, they are only just an imperfect human like you are! From personal experience, that leads me to feeling more broken than before. As amazing and as godly as he or she may be, only God can truly fill those voids.

“Why are you still searching for love as if I’m not enough?”

Can I be real with y’all? (This is where you nod your head, “Of course, Dolce,”) I myself have been blindly climbing back into this rut time after time of hunting for my identity and love and basically all of the above in people and places other than where I should be looking (God!).

For example, the other day I was feeling pretty blah. Ya know, those days where you wake up with numerous new pimples and you’re just not feeling too special? So I proceeded to get my hair done, pamper myself, and have may eyebrows threaded. That should fix all of my problems right?! 😉 Plot twist: I still felt crumby. Maybe even worse.

I went home, fell to my knees, and poured out my heart to God.

So many worries and fixations inside my head had been cluttering my mind, I was looking for satisfaction and comfort in the wrong place the whole time.

Jeremiah 31:3 says God loves us with an everlasting love. His love is perfect, it is what we have been searching for.

Jeremiah 29:11 says God already knows the plans He has for you, they are plans to give you a hope and a future. In our Lord we find security.

Zephaniah 3:17 says God takes great delight in His children. We have His full acceptance.

1 Peter 5:7 says we can cast all our anxiety and worries on Him because He cares for us. In Him we can find comfort and peace.

Colossians 2:10 says we are complete in Christ. In Jesus Christ, our broken pieces are beautifully glued back together.

Paleo Talk & Caveman Chocolate Chip Cookies

Happy Wednesday, beautiful people. I hope your day is filled of sprinkles and glitter. 😉

So, as some of my close friends know, I am currently following a paleo/primal style way of eating.
No, not a diet (that word makes me gag)..just a way of eating. Meaning, I am eating mostly veggies, fruits, meat, eggs, nuts, oils & some dairy. I am eating A LOT more fat than I was previously, mostly in the form of egg yolks, coconut oil, olive oil, avocado, nuts, butter & animal fat..it makes me feel gooooooood 🙂 Basically getting a good mix of protein, fats & carbs at all meals. Focusing on eating real, whole foods. Probably eating close to 80-90% paleo, with a little wiggle room for occasional treats & non-paleo noms!

Notable changes from switching to paleo/primal:

  • Less bloating (hallejuler)
  • More stable energy throughout the day
  • Cravings for sugar have significantly went down
  • My taste buds are a lot more sensitive to sugary foods now, sugary foods I used to eat taste almost TOO sugary for me now
  • My digestive system is working quite well, if you catch my drift 😉 #Imreallymature

My first 2 weeks were kind of rough during the “detox” stage. I really found you just have to push through it though. Apparently detoxing your body doesn’t feel too great. You will feel lethargic, cranky & just plain crumby. My advice: Get support from loved ones, put your big girl panties on & EAT ENOUGH CALORIES.

One mistake I think many people make when switching to paleo is simply not eating enough. Think about it: you cut out the grains and up your veggies, naturally there will be a drastic drop in caloric intake. So make sure you either just transition to paleo-friendly carbs or up your fats a good amount to make up for the calories. Your body will thank you.

Here’s a nifty little info graphic I used to figure out where to start & what my meals should look like

whole30-meal-planning

There is a booty load of information on paleo & primal online, just make sure it is from a credible source! There are tons of paleo chat boards, and I am not trying to say they are all wrong, but proceed with caution when listening to advice found on there.

Here are some sources & blogs I personally found helpful for my transition:
Chris Kresser

Robb Wolff

PurelyTwins

Meg the RHN

Nerd Fitness’s Paleo Guide

There are many others, but these really helped open my eyes!

And now, without further ado, I give you..

Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add the eggs & then the melted coconut oil. Fold in the chocolate chips.

Scoop onto cookie trays using a tablespoon, my cookies were about a heaping tablespoon each.

Cook at 325 F for 12-15 minutes, or until golden. DO NOT overcook, they will turn out very dry!

Get this: only 9 grams of carbs per cookie 😮

Enjoy this nice paleo treat with a big glass of almond or coconut milk.

Dunk, chew, repeat.

Much love,

You are ____ enough.

Even if we don’t consciously realize it, we can get caught in the trap of not feeling ENOUGH.

Beautiful enough.
Skinny enough.
Smart enough.
Fit enough.
Healthy enough.
Successful enough.
Rich enough.
Godly enough.
Social enough.
Funny enough.
GOOD enough.

Oh the list can go on of poison darts of thoughts that the devil aim at our vulnerable souls.

Being completely open here, I struggle with feeling ENOUGH on a daily basis.
My type A, perfectionist personality comes as an disadvantage to me at times.

Plot twist: Those thoughts AREN’T TRUE.

God looks at you with Love, He sees a beautifully perfect creation of His very own hands.

I want you each to feel at peace with yourself. At peace with the beautiful (or handsome!) human being God has crafted you into. You are a masterpiece, darnit!
I want you to freely love yourself. Your quirks and all. I wish I could give a big hug to each of you, but instead I will leave you with scripture that warms my heart & reminds me in times of doubt that God made me & I am enough.

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. (‭Psalms‬ ‭139‬:‭13-16‬ NLT)

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. (‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭9‬ NIV)

“What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. (‭Luke‬ ‭12‬:‭6-7‬ NLT)

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (‭Matthew‬ ‭11‬:‭28-30‬ NLT)

See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me. (‭Isaiah‬ ‭49‬:‭16‬ NIV)

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (‭Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭10‬ NLT)

2015/04/img_7684-0.jpg

Today is not my day.

Have you ever said that when your day seems to unravel event after event?
…Your alarm failed to go off so you’re rushing at the speed on light, throwing your hair up in a messy bun. [Side note, ladies: Let’s be honest, a messy bun takes a stupid silly amount of perfecting.]
…You are already running late to school/work and you realize your car is on E
…You and your friend or significant other are butting heads all day
…You totally forget about your important exam and totally bomb it
…Anddd to top it off, your fish died

Let’s face it, we’ve all had these types of days. No matter how “small” or big a problem may be that you face in your day, it can make us feel totally out of control and useless. We have all been there.

“It is just not my day,”

Here’s the thing, that statement could not be any more TRUE. No day is “your day”. Why? Because every single day, month, year, decade, and beyond is The Lord’s.

“This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it,” Psalm 118:24 NLT

God has perfectly planned out the itinerary for today, tomorrow, and all the rest of the days of eternity. Let us celebrate His grace no matter what our day may throw at us. DEPEND on Him; day in and day out.

One of my biggest faults is trying to take control from God. Basically what it boils down to is trying to BE God. That makes me cringe just thinking about it, who would ever try to fill in almighty shoes of our one and only Lord? But in reality, that’s what it is when we try to be the captain of our own lives, recklessly sailing through life after what’s “best” for ourselves.

Then the boat crashes. And we feel like a failure. “Why did God let this happen?” “Doesn’t He want what’s best for me?” “Does He even love me?”

We can pursue genuinely good things every day–admission to a good school, the job we have been praying for for months and years, the person we think is potentially our future spouse, etc.–but if that certain thing doesn’t align with God’s ultimate will, that door will be shut. Sometimes it is slammed in our face and we bang our pinky toe on the way out.

But that isn’t the end of your story. God has a beautifully arranged plot to your life, all you have to do is surrender and trust each day. It will be a battle. Great things you desire may not happen, but know that God has something even more miraculous planned.

353b96dd16401353348a1048c3d6eaa6

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them,” Romans 8:28 NLT

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope,” Jeremiah 29:11 NLT

Seek God’s higher purpose in the middle of the chaos. He is performing miracles 24/7. Soak up His presence. Hand over the steering wheel to Him.

XOXO, Dolce

Not-so-typical detox.

I woke up today with my Daddy God tugging on my heart. I could feel Him calling me. I knew today was a “detox” day.

No, not a 14-day green juice cleanse. [let’s be honest, you’d never catch me doing that #ilikefood]

de·tox
informal
noun
ˈdētäks/
1. a process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances; detoxification.

Ridding the body–and MIND–of toxic & unhealthy things. Meaning, purging things from my life that do not bring me closer to my Lord.

For me, I knew I needed to “spring clean” the accounts I follow on Instagram for this blog. I often find myself wandering fitness Instagrams, becoming envious of other girl’s bodies & becoming more and more insecure about mine.
THIS IS NOT HEALTHY.
I immediately unfollowed 100+ people. No, not because they are horrible people. In fact, they are probably wonderful! But for me, seeing them post progress pictures everyday of their beautifully toned legs & lean stomach, leads me further away from God.

He calls me “fearfully & wonderfully made“. He calls me beautiful. He calls me worthy. He calls me HIS.

Motivation to be healthy is good. I’m not saying it is not! But when this because an idol in front of God in our life, this is where it becomes toxic. That goes for anything–a career, academic performance, a significant other, food.

Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭10‬ NLT

What do you need to detox from your life today?

XOXO, Dolce

Short & sweet.

This post is going to be short & sweet. Hence the title.

I have a secret.

A secrety secret. :O

FLAWS AREN’T REAL!

Yep, I said it. I know, I know, you’re now thinking “Then what the heck is this pimple doing in the middle of my forehead?”

News flash: You & I are created in the very image of our almighty, perfect, everlasting Savior & Heavenly Father.

“So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27 NLT

Here’s a little homework for you:

  1. Stand in front of a mirror.
  2. Look at the detail of your eyes, the way each individual hair has it’s own direction, the tiny lines of your fingertips, the curves of your body, the bright glow of your skin.
  3. Take a piece of paper. Write an apology letter to your body. Apologize to it for bashing your “fat thighs”. Apologize to it for taking down to it. Take this time to recognize all these behaviors.
  4. Take another piece of paper. Write a thank you note to God for making you so unique.

Feel better? I hope you do. Keep that apology letter in mind next time you look down on your body. Remember that God made you His handiwork; you are His work of art!

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

Psalm 139:13-16

So back to my original point: flaws aren’t real. Get it now? I hope so 🙂

You are beautiful.

  • It’s FINALLY somewhat sunny in Houston. We have had non-stop cold, rainy weather for what seems like a while! Does anybody else get a little down when it’s dreary outside? For a couple days there I felt so blue. I’ve come to this conclusion: I NEED sunshine!
  • I treated myself to some brand spankin’ new Nike Free Trainers ❤ These things were $120 *gasp*, which usually I’de be like oh heck-to-the-no, but since I got a nice bonus from work I decided to indulge a little. And, come on, these are pretty sweet 🙂

  • I’m currently sitting by my boyfriend. He is the cutest thing ever. Hi, Mark 😀
  • The Lord has placed body peace on my heart lately. Simply loving my body just how God has created me to be. I’m not perfect, and I never will be. I wasn’t created to be perfect, I was created to be Dolce! I am making a conscious effect to catch myself when I am talking down on myself, which I will admit I have been struggling with lately. Luckily, I have a God who is strengthening me day-by-day and teaching me to be the woman of God has has planned me to be.

  • Lastly, I have recently been working with my new nutrition coach, Ashley Nordman! I purchased a package for a 12-week nutrition plan. She has created a great, easy-to-follow nutrition plan, with set macros & a sample meal plan I can follow if I don’t want to count macros for the day. She also encourages a bit of sugar each day and a good weekly cheat meal…oh gosh, do I have to? 😉 She is SUCH a sweetheart, she takes every factor into account when making your plan and can customize it any way you want it. For 12 weeks I will be following my plan as best as possible, and following up with Ashley with progress pictures.
    My goals:
    1) learn to fuel by body right & find BALANCE
    2) build strength
    3) be overall healthy & fit
    4) “tone up” just a tad

Last Day of 2014 + Tuna Cakes Recipe

Happy New Year’s Eve everyone! 😀
Jeez, I almost can’t believe 2014 is over. This whole year has gone by in a flash. Like…did this year even happen?! From beginning my 3rd year of college/1st year at University of Houston to the beginning of a beautiful relationship with a wonderful guy whom God has so unfathomably blessed me with–it’s been one awesome year, to say the least. ❤

I’m not the one to make new year resolution, per say. But here is my list of things I will be doing MY best to do/change throughout this year and beyond. I like to call them life changes rather than resolutions, they don’t stop when 2015 is up!

  • Have quiet time & prayer everyday
  • Be ALL THERE when I’m with my friends & family (i.e. getting off my phone..)
  • Find balance with exercise & nutrition for my body
  • Be still. Take a break. Chill the heck out. Genuinely enjoy my life.
  • Be okay with not being perfect & understand I never will be perfect and that is ok

Well there you have it! Luckily I have the most amazing people in my life how can keep me accountable to making these voluntary changes. I won’t be perfect at it, and that’s ok–hence my last point 🙂

Side note: I finally got my hair cut today. New year, new do. 🙂

Also, this morning I decided to do some cardio after my arm workout this morning. Who am I? To those who know me, they know cardio and I usually don’t see eye-to-eye. It’s a love-hate relationship, that’s for sure! I have been neglecting my endurance & cardiovascular health lately so I’ve been making an effort to get in some good ‘ol cardio a few times a week. My favorite cardio is HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) on the stairmaster, dreadmill treadmill, and battle ropes.

Now onto my new recipe!

Tuna Cakes:

  • can of tuna (I use solid white albacore tuna in water)
  • an egg
  • a couple handfuls of chopped spinach
  • a couple spoonfuls of feta cheese
  • 1 tsp. mustard (regular works, grey poupon or deli mustard would be yummy as well)
  • pepper to taste

Shape into 3-4 tuna cakes on a heated skillet. Cook about 3 minutes each side.

Topped mine off with a half of an avocado! This recipe is full of protein & healthy fats making it a nice healthy pick-me-up meal.

Have a blessed & safe New Year’s Eve!
